The Arctic Circle challenge came about through a passion for biking and Black Sheep’s long history of supporting local charities. All proceeds will be donated to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, North Yorkshire for an essential piece of equipment needed in the Scott Suite, its breast cancer ward.
Judith Curtis, Friarage Hospital nurse said: “We are thrilled that Black Sheep will be able to help Friarage hospital and in turn the local community in such a big way. The money will buy essential new technology, and with new microscopes and attachments it will not only help us diagnose Breast Cancer, but will enable to use the equipment in conjunction with teaching. This donation really will benefit women of the community and we are very thankful to Black Sheep Brewery.”
The Black Sheep flock will not only be raising a great deal of money by completing the ride, but will also be forming some new relationships and building on their knowledge of brewing by visiting breweries on the way. The Arctic ride along with brewery tours will culminate with a visit to Mack’s brewery, the most northern brewery in Norway.
Paul Theakston, Managing Director of Black Sheep Brewery added: “This ride is such a terrific opportunity to not only raise as much money as we can for such a great cause, which is close to our community, but is such an adventure for all those involved in the planning, preparation and participation. I am positive we will all learn so much about ourselves and our business along the way.”
Black Sheep has held a number of events throughout the year to drum up support and donations, before setting off on their adventure on the 9th June 2009. They have now raised in excess of £30k, smashing their target of £25k.
